The Regulator for Charities in England and Wales

Andrew Hind, the Chief Executive of the Charity Commission, has been presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Charity Awards 2008 held last night in London.
The award is in recognition of Andrew’s long-standing commitment and service to the voluntary sector, dating back to his time at ActionAid in the 1980’s. Andrew has been Chief Executive of the Charity Commission since October 2004 and has been reappointed for a further two years until October 2010.
Chair of the Charity Commission Dame Suzi Leather said;
“It is with great admiration and pleasure that I can warmly congratulate Andrew for his hard-earned, much-deserved award. Andrew’s impact on the sector has been, clearly, far wider than his current role here as Chief Executive, but it is characteristic of him that he sees this award as reflecting on the Commission generally. Andrew’s commitment to the sector and his unshakeable belief in its importance to society permeates all that he does here and I am thrilled that this has been recognised externally and at such a key event.”
Previous winners of the Outstanding Achievement Award include Sir Roger Singleton, and Baroness Jill Pitkeathley. The winners were announced at the gala presentation dinner, hosted by comedian and broadcaster Marcus Brigstocke, at Battersea Evolution on 19 June 2008. The Charity Awards programme is organised by Charity Finance, the leading business publication for the voluntary sector. The Charity Awards 2008 is sponsored by CAF (Charities Aid Foundation).
After qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1979, Andrew worked in practice in Kenya before taking his first job in the charity sector with ActionAid in 1986. Since then he has had extensive experience in the sector as both a senior executive and a trustee. From 1986-91 he was Deputy Chief Executive at ActionAid and then from 1992-95 he was Director of Finance & Corporate Services at Barnardo’s.
Andrew was Chief Operating Officer of BBC World Service for ten years, responsible for the World Service’s financial relationship with Government and its broadcasting relationships with partners around the world. While working for the BBC Andrew continued his active links with the voluntary sector. He served as a trustee for Voluntary Service Overseas (1995-98) and was Honorary Treasurer for both Unicef UK (1995-2002) and The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial fund (1999-2004).
Andrew was co-founder of the Charity Finance Directors’ Group in 1988 and its second chair from 1992-94. In 1995 he published 'The Governance and Management of Charities' which became an established reference work in the UK not-for-profit sector and in a number of other countries.
Andrew is married with three children and lives in High Barnet, Hertfordshire.
