This is a supplementary statement of results of an inquiry under section 8 of the Charities Act 1993 as amended by the Charities Act 2006 (“the Act”) and published on 12 July 2007.

The Charity

1. Stevenage Muslim Community Centre (‘the charity) was registered as a charity in November 1990.

Commission inquiry

2. In July 2006 the Commission opened an inquiry into the charity because of regulatory concerns including the lack of validly appointed trustees.

3. The inquiry found that no election of trustees had taken place for some time and there was a dispute in the community as to who should be running the charity. That charity had also failed to submit accounts.

4. On 8 February 2007 the Commission made orders appointing three persons as trustees and sanctioning them to call an Annual General Meeting and oversee the election of new trustees and the submission of overdue accounts. The inquiry was closed on 16 April 2007.

Action since the inquiry closure

5. On 15 July 2007 the charity held an AGM and new trustees were formerly elected.

6. The Commission has provided advice and guidance to the new trustees on their legal duties and responsibilities notably regarding the maintenance of the charity’s records.
